For some reason whenever I hear Arena, however, I get turned off. Not quite sure why, maybe just because of the shallow implementations of arena modes that have been done in the past. Not necessarily by Bungie. I wonder how similar it will be to Firefight in Reach. I am actually pretty excited for them to mix it up and not provide a raid. An arena style survival mode could be done poorly, but I am glad that they are giving this a shot. The idea of capping my level again just so i can do the stupid raid does not sound like fun. I would be much more willing to participate in something like a horde mode at this point.

As guessed by numerous fans, Prison of Elders is a variation on the Horde mode first popularized years ago by Gears of War. In the storyline of House of Wolves, most of the Fallen soldiers that previously served the Queen of the Awoken have betrayed her, but one of the Fallen remained behind in the Reef and is still loyal. Most endgame activities in Destiny Nightfall Strikes, Raids, the Trials of Osiris PvP mode, the higher-level versions of Prison of Elders currently do not support matchmaking since they require the sort of coordination only an established group of players could attain. Even endgame activities that do support matchmaking, such as the Iron Banner PvP event, the lowest-difficulty tier of Prison of Elders, and Heroic Strikes, are so difficult to complete that throwing yourself to the mercy of the matchmaking system is a gamble where the odds are definitely not in your favor.
If there was more endgame content for solo-minded Destiny players to sink their teeth into, I doubt the game would be getting as much of a bad rap as it does now. A typical Prison of Elders match is made up of five rounds with each round awarding a small bit of faction reputation upon completion. I think a fair compromise would be to offer minor rewards for each round completed that went beyond a small bump in reputation; maybe a cache of Glimmer or some crafting materials or even the chance at a rare engram.
Trying to string players along with the promise of a big reward at the end can be equal parts tempting and frustrating but offering smaller prizes along the way can help smooth over any aggravation that crops up from an unsuccessful attempt. Finishing a round of Crucible PvP or a cooperative Strike in Destiny currently awards faction reputation and marks used to buy faction gear. Providing this extra incentive would encourage players to stick it out through a grueling Prison of Elders match or a Crucible game in which they were on the losing team instead of simply quitting and leaving their teammates in the lurch.
It would be even better if Bungie could figure out a way to scale the end-of-match rewards to the difficulty of the match itself making it through a level 32 Prison of Elders match, for instance, would come with a much higher chance at rarer rewards than completing a level 18 Strike. These are just some suggestions I thought up to make both Destiny and multiplayer games in general friendlier towards casual players.
